You can test your hydroponic pH using three standard tools: digital meters, liquid test kits, or paper test strips. Always take your measurement after mixing your nutrients and ensuring the reservoir water is well stirred.

1. Digital pH Pens (Most Recommended)

This is the fastest, most precise method for active hydroponic growers.

  • How to use it: Remove the cap, turn it on, dip the glass electrode tip into the water, and wait roughly 10 seconds for the digital display screen to stabilize.

  • Pro-Tip: You must calibrate these meters once a month using factory standard reference solutions (usually pH 4.0 and 7.0) and store the glass tip in storage solution so it does not dry out and fail.

2. Liquid pH Test Kits (Most Reliable)

A highly accurate, budget-friendly option that never requires digital calibration.

  • How to use it: Fill the provided small plastic vial halfway with your reservoir water. Add 2 to 3 drops of the pH indicator liquid, shake the vial well, and compare the changing color of the liquid against the included color chart.

  • Pro-Tip: Look for yellow-green (around 5.8 to 6.0). Red or bright orange means it is too acidic; dark blue or purple means it is too alkaline.

3. pH Paper Test Strips (Cheapest)

Great for quick, rough checks but harder to read precisely.

  • How to use it: Tear off a small piece of litmus paper, dip it into your reservoir water for two seconds, pull it out, and watch the paper change color. Match that color to the reference packaging grid to find your number.

  • Pro-Tip: Standard litmus paper is too broad. Buy "narrow-range" strips (specifically calibrated for a 5.0 to 7.0 span) to get the accuracy required for hydroponics.
